Jobs to do in September
Written by Kate Dunn

• Trim conifer and laurel hedges.

• Prune roses after flowering, remove suckers from the base and take cuttings now.

• Plant daffodil and hyacinth bulbs in pots ready for next spring.

• Harvest apples, pears, plums, main crop potatoes, onions and carrots.

• Plant garlic, turnips, endives, winter lettuce and spring cabbage.

• Clear borders of faded summer bedding plants and cut back tired perennials past their best – compost the waste.

• Lift and divide congested clumps of perennials, replanting the healthy young growth and discarding old, unproductive portions.

• Late September is a good time to lay new turf or raise/repair a lawn using seed.
