Jobs to do in July/August

Trim foliage from your strawberries, taking it back to just above the
crowns. Remove unwanted runners and rake away old straw.
Plant leeks, endives, cabbage, turnips, lettuce, raddish.

Harvest crops regularly in your vegi patch to keep them productive; beans,
courgettes, tomatoes, cucumbers, etc. Pick young lettuce whilst tender.

Continue mowing your lawn regularly to keep it looking smart and dead head flowers
so they remain productive. Dead-head rhododendrons.

Roses - trim back stems that have finished flowering to a point above a leaf. This
encourages late blooms.

Tie in long shoots of new wisteria growth to continue developing its framework.

Take the main growth upwards, then along wires so that flowers can drape from
these. Keep well watered during dry periods.

Cut lavender when in full flower for drying. In late summer, once flowering is over,
cut back hard as this will encourage it to bush new growth and stop it looking woody
and bare next year.

Pick fresh herbs to dry or freeze in ice cubes.

Increase your flower garden inexpensively by taking cuttings. For example, pinks,
carnations, hydrangeas, pelargoniums, osteospermums. Also take cuttings of shrubs
from non-flowing shoots - ceonothus, forsythia, flowering currant, escallonia and
lavender.

Remember to water all your pots and hanging baskets regularly. Pay special attention
to your camellias if you want a good show of flowers next year.

And last but not least
sit back, relax and enjoy the sunshine and your garden!!
