Jobs to do in April
Written by Veronica Mitchell

Remove all faded flowers from your daffodils and pansies. Let your daffodils die back naturally so they put energy back into the bulbs and, next year, they will produce a better display.

Once they have finished flowering, prune and trim Spiraea, Buddleia, Dogwoods, Cotoneasters, Potentilla, Mahonia and Japonica.

Dig up and divide large clumps of hostas. Snowdrops can be divided now and re-planted ready for next spring’s display.

Plant biennials, sweet peas, dahlia tubers and penstemons.

Roses: cut back last year’s stems by about half.

If you have a greenhouse, start making up your summer hanging baskets but make sure you keep them in the greenhouse until any danger of frost has passed.
