Tripping
Written by G & N Compagnies

After having received several enquiries about the electricity tripping I thought that this month I would give you a few hints and things to check for:

Reducing sensitivity

Some lighting circuit MCB's can trip off whenever a light bulb fails. The problem is often caused by pieces of rupturing element wire causing a short circuit inside the bulb, the solution is either to get an electrician to fit less sensitive MCBs on your lighting circuits, or to buy top quality light bulbs which have a fuse in the base designed to blow when the lamp fails.

Watch the watts

When replacing a bulb in a light fitting, check inside the lampshade for a label indicating the maximum bulb wattage the manufacturer recommends. Do not exceed this, or you risk damaging the shade or the fitting.

Circuit Down?

When nothing on a circuit works, turn off the lights and unplug the appliances that run from it. Then check the main fuse box to see if the circuit fuse has blown or the MCB has switched off. Replace the fuse or switch the MCB back on, if it blows or trips again immediately, there is a fault on the circuit wiring and you need to call an electrician to find it. If it does not trip again immediately switch on lights or plugs in appliances one by one to identify which is causing the problem, check, too, that you are not overloading the circuit.
