Viruses and your PC
Written by Anglo Computers

Aside from electrical surges the biggest threat to your computer is a virus.

A virus can be downloaded to your computer via a malicious email, or from a website. They come in different shapes and sizes, ranging from those that will just slow down your computer to deleting essential files that are key to the operation of your computer. If you don’t have any anti-virus software, and you have already got a virus, there are ways of cleaning up your PC and speeding things up again. There is no hard and fast rule for curing virus problems, every case is different, so you will need to talk to a professional to get the job done. The best way to deal with viruses is to stop them from getting to your computer in the first place. So if you are emailing or just surfing the net there is one thing you cannot be without – Anti-Virus software.

The best things in life are free – Anti-Virus from AVG

There are a lot of different anti-virus programs available on the market, with a range of different prices and features. You would think that spending your hard earned euros on a well-known one would be the best option, however, several of the most popular paid-for programs can actually cause more harm than good on some older machines.

We have had a lot of customers coming to us with what would seem to be virus problems. They describe how their computers have either slowed down drastically, or in some cases have actually become un-useable. On closer inspection the problem is quite ironically the anti-virus software itself!

The problem is that many of these programs are too big for their own boots. They use so much of your computer’s processor power that it does not have the capacity to do anything else. Where this is the case we would always recommend de-installing the troublesome anti-virus software, and installing something better…

The best things in life are free – installing AVG

We actually recommend some software that not only does an excellent job and has an impeccable reputation, but also has the added bonus of being completely free! Its name is AVG. It is free to all home users, however, all commercial enterprises should pay for the service. We have been using it on our home PCs for years, and have opted to pay for it on all our internet café computers here at the shop. We also install it on all the computers we sell, and have had no complaints from any of our customers.

It works quietly in the background of your PC from the moment you start up your computer, and while you work on your PC it will carry on doing checks – checking your emails as they come in, and checking websites as you are browsing. In short, you wouldn’t even know it was working because it works so well.

How to install AVG

We are always available to help you install AVG on your computer, however there is no reason why you shouldn’t have a go at installing it yourself. Just visit their website, http://www.free.grisoft.com/. Once there, download the link, and run the programme. It really is as easy at that!! From time to time AVG will bring out new versions, and discontinue old ones. You will be notified of this, and encouraged to start paying for the service, however, to date there has not been a single version that you really do have to pay for. All you need to do when your version expires is go back to the Grisoft website, and download the latest version!
