Jobs to do in June
Written by Kate Dunn

• Ensure you keep up to speed with your weeding – hoe between flowers and crops regularly now the weeds are fighting back!

• Lift and divide congested clumps of iris after flowering. Dig up the whole clump, cutting away old or damaged pieces of rhizome and replant keeping the rhizome resting at the soil surface to bake in the sun.

• Add feed to your watering can about once a fortnight when feeding your pots, hanging baskets and tomatoes. As temperatures increase, ensure you water containers and thirsty plants (like tomatoes) regularly.

• Cut overgrown clematis back hard after flowering. This will encourage flowering later in the year. Pinch back the tips of trailing plants in hanging baskets to make them branch out. Pick off dead flowers in all your tubs and hanging baskets every few days so they remain productive.

• Thin out seedlings from earlier sowings to their final spacing, e.g. carrots, parsnips, onion blanc, cabbage, etc.

• Thin out congested fruit trees (apples, peaches, plums) – remaining fruits will grow larger if competition is reduced.

• Continue planting in your vegetable plot - it’s not too late to try a new variety – sweet corn for instance.

• For a superior crop remove suckers from you tomato plants.

• Tie shoots of climbing roses and honeysuckle back to supports.

• Take cuttings of fuchsias and geraniums. Continue planting out tender bedding plants, into beds or containers, watering them in well.
